THE WHO AT THE SUPER BOWL

The Who will perform in the BRIDGESTONE SUPER BOWL XLIV HALFTIME SHOW on CBS Sports at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida on Sunday, February 7, the NFL announced today during halftime of the Oakland Raiders at Dallas Cowboys game on CBS.

The Bridgestone Super Bowl halftime show is one of the most anticipated musical events of the year. More than 151 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year’s show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide in more than 230 countries and territories.

The Who join an esteemed list of recent halftime acts that includes Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, and Paul McCartney.

Few bands have had a more lasting impact on the rock era and the reverberating pop culture than The Who . Emerging in the mid-1960s as a new and incendiary force in rock n' roll, their brash style and poignant storytelling garnered them one of music's most passionate followings, with the legendary foursome blazing a searing new template for rock, punk, and everything after. Inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, placing 27 top-forty singles in the United States and United Kingdom and earning 17 Top Ten albums, including the 1969 groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, 1971's pummeling Live At Leeds, 1973's Quadrophenia, 1978's Who Are You, and their most recently acclaimed Endless Wire, their first full length album of new material in nearly two decades. Last year they became the first rock band ever to be awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.

Singer ROGER DALTREY, guitarist and songwriter PETE TOWNSHEND, The Who's two remaining original members, are once again being hailed as rock standard bearers. Daltrey and Townshend debuted in 1964 with a trio of anthems--“I Can’t Explain,” “The Kids Are Alright” and “My Generation.” Since then they have delivered to the world hits such as “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Pinball Wizard,” Who Are You,” and,” You Better You Bet.” Unprecedented demand for their sold out trek across the globe, which began in 2007 and blazed up until the first half of 2009, reaffirmed their reputation as rock's most influential and robust performing artists.

    cool, was die da wohl spielen? Sicher Baba O´Riley, My Generation & Won´t Get Fooled Again, ich glaub nicht das wir da gross überrascht werden..wär ja cool, wenn es etwas pomöses wär, mit ner heftigen Lightshow und Lasern...gespannt bin..

      So wie ich das interpretiere, spielen sie nur in der Halbzeit ??? Da ist ja wohl nur Zeit für eine Handvoll Songs. Hmmm ...

      Ich habe da auch etwas gemischte Gefühle bei diesem Auftritt. Ich finde, so eine Show-Einlage in der Halbzeitpause bei einem Sport-Ereignis hat mir einen etwas zu kommerziellen Anstrich. Und kommerziell waren The Who eigentlich nie so richtig und passt eigentlich auch nicht zu einer Rockband. Nicht, dass sie da in Richtung Rolling Stones abdriften, denn dann steht die eigene Vermarktung im Vordergrund und der authentische Spirit des Rock-Mythos bleibt auf der Strecke ...

        na, chris...wenn du mal schaust wieviel "Greatest Hits" und "Remastered" Sachen The Who auf den Markt geschmissen haben, dann merkt man schnell, das es sehr wohl eine kommerzorientierte Band ist..Der Spirit liegt ja in der Musik selbst und eher in den Liveshows. Ich habe halt die Befürchtung das Sie nicht besonders gut spielen werden...das war immer so, wenn sie ne Auszeit hatten, dann brauchen die erstmal um in Gang zu kommen. NIcht das und sowas erwartet wie Voorburg 73 oder Liveaid 85...Das war ja echt Mist..Na Ja, wenigstens trinken die nicht mehr übermässig...hehe..mal abwarten

          Ja, mit den "Greatest Hits" und "Remastered"-Sachen hast du natürlich Recht. Und deine Befürchtung bzgl. der Live-Qualität nach einer Auszeit ist wohl auch nicht so ganz ohne. Hoffen wir, dass sie trotzdem ihren Spirit rüberbringen und viele neue (Sport-)Fans hinzugewinnen.

              Denkt mal an den Auftritt beim Konzert für New York.Das war einer der Besten Auftritte von The Who und der Beste an diesem Abend und das nach einer Auszeit.Ich glaub das sie gut vorbereitet sind und das Stadion rocken.Natürlich spielen sie die Hits,alles andere wäre ja schwachsinn.Glaubt an die Band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                na ja, Concert für New York war etwas ganz ganz spezielles..eine unglaublich gute performance..aber, es war New York, das ganze war ein sehr emotionaler event...schau dir die Zuschauer an..woah...das kann man mit nix vergleichen..bei so ner halbzeitshow gehen alle bestimmt ein Bier trinken, schieben ne schnelle Nummer oder gehen mit dem Hund Gassi und die Zuschauer selber sind Sportfanatiker die unmengen Kohle ausgeben für das Spiel..na ja, trotzdem gut eigentlich, das sie dort spielen um zu zeigen, das 2010/2011 die letzten glorreichen jahre werden..neues Album (auf das ich sehr sehr gespannt bin) und Tour, neues Musical..cool...

    Hallo, ob die ARD aber auch was von den Who zeigt ?

    Beim Gig im Rahmen des ersten F1 Rennen in der Saison 2009 in Melborne hat man auch nix gesehen.

          30 Minuten wären ja toll. Aber nach meinen Infos dauert die Pause 12-15 Minuten.
          Viel bleibt da nicht. Ein Art Medley wie Queen beim Live Aid wäre nicht schlecht.

    Ich glaube es waren 20 Minuten die B.Springsteen letztes
    Jahr hatte.
    Da hat er 2 Lieder auch einfach mal durch das weglassen einer Strophe gekürzt.
    Mal sehen/hören was die Who spielen werden.
    Bei "Baba O´Riley", "Won`t get fooled again" und "Who Are You" wäre ja die Zeit schon um. Das Tommy Medley/incl. Sparks wäre natürlich auch nett.
    "A Quick One" würde thematisch auch gut passen (aber sehr unwahrscheinlich).
    Also eher wahrscheinlich:
    "I can`t explain", "My Generation", "Pinball Wizard" oder "Behind Blue Eyes", "Who are you". "Baba O`Riley" oder die Single Version von WGFA.
    Hmm ... wo bleibt da eigentlich "Substitute" ...
    Na ja, das wichtigste ist, dass Roger Daltrey an dem Abend hoffentlich keine Stimmprobleme hat( dann singt Townshend halt "In The Ether" ... :-) )
    Aber bei 20 Minuten sollte eigentlich nichts schiefgehen.
    Da kann er vielleicht eher noch etwas mehr geben, als bei den normalen Konzerten.

      Realistisch ist leider nur ein neuer Aufguss vom Live 8 Gig, also Who Are You und Won`t get fooled again, und sollten sie wieder Erwarten doch ein paar Minuten länger bekommen, dann dürfen wir uns auch noch auf Baba und Behind Blue Eyes freuen. Aber wenn das dann so gut rüberkommt wie beim Concert for NY im Oktober 2001, soll es mir recht sein. Für die vier genannten Songs spricht rein marktstrategisch der Umstand, daß sie vor allem in den USA sowohl durch die Verwendung als TV-Melodie (CSI) als auch durch erfolgreiche Coverversionen (Limp B.) einem jüngeren Publikum geläufig sind.

        The Who's Pete Townshend, in an exclusive interview with Billboard, has revealed that the band's upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance will feature a "compact medley" of their signature classic-rock anthems.

        "We're kinda doing a mashup of stuff," the guitarist tells Billboard. "A bit of 'Baba O'Riley,' a bit of 'Pinball Wizard,' a bit of the close of 'Tommy,' a bit of 'Who Are You,' and a bit of 'Won't Get Fooled Again.' It works -- it's quite a saga. A lot of the stuff that we do has that kind of celebratory vibe about it -- we've always tried to make music that allows the audience to go a bit wild if they want to. Hopefully it will hit the spot."

        The annual Super Bowl half time concert has become one of rock's highest profile gigs, with U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Prince, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney each taking the stage in recent years. The medley format is not unusual for artists with such a deep catalogue - Springsteen and Prince took a similar approach.

        Speculation about the set, conceived this year by the band's Roger Daltrey along with Pete's brother Simon Townshend, executive producer Ricky Kirschner and new director Hamish Hamilton, is always of huge interest to fans, and last year online sportsbook Bodog took bets on the set's opening number.

        If the past is any indicator, The Who's halftime hits medley will give the band a big sales boost. Last year, Bruce Springsteen used his appearance to mark the release of "Working On A Dream," which hit stores the week before the big game. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on the week culminating with Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 1, 2009), and stayed at No. 2 the following week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

        Billboard's full preview of the Who's Super Bowl performance, plus extended interviews with Towshend and Daltrey, will appear in the Jan. 30 issue of Billboard, and on Billboard.com starting Friday (Jan. 29).

        Super Bowl XLIV, between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints, will be played Sunday, February 7 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami
